Soda Ash Or Saop Ash...
Soda ash is a cosmetic issue that can appear on handmade soap as a reaction between unsaponified lye in the soap batter and carbon dioxide in the air. It is not harmful in finished soap. Soda ash can be minimized by covering soap in the mold or spraying the surface of the soap with isopropyl alcohol. If soda ash has already formed, it can be washed, cut, buffed, or steamed off. Soda ash can be caused by excess lye, cold process soap left uncovered while in the mold, soap that’s removed too quickly from the mold, soap poured at thin trace, high humidity, poor water quality, and other less common factors.
Orange or Brown, Spots on Your Soap!
Soap Opera Soapz and its owner would like to explain why orange spots, also known as DOS (dreaded orange spots), might appear on your handmade soap.
What causes orange spots in homemade soap?
There are various factors that contribute to DOS, mainly the type of soap ingredients used and their age. One or more of these factors may have caused your soap to turn spotty.
-
Oxidation and rancidity:
-
Old oils/fats:
-
Old fragrances or essential oils: Using Citrus Oils.
-
Excess oils (super fatting)
Oils high in linolenic and linoleic fatty acids: Oils high in these fatty acids increase the chance of rancidity. While one of the great joys of making homemade soap is using lovely oils not found in mass-produced soaps, sometimes these contribute to DOS. Examples include:
- Apricot kernel
- Canola
- Grapeseed
- Sweet almond- SOSZ Main Ingredient
- Soybean
- Sunflower
Loss of Fragrance...
Often, handmade soaps and candles that are not commercially made with artificial fillers and preservatives can lose their pungent scent. However, you are still safe to use the soaps for their skin benefit properties. Over time, you may start to smell the natural ingredients of the soaps combined with the added fragrance of fragrance oils. This also applies to soy and paraffin candles. There is an expectation when it comes to fragrances and the potency of any products. Both the soaps and candles are still safe to use. The candles can always be used as a light source, and the soaps will still provide added benefits to your skincare routine.
